To appreciate all that New Hope is today, you need to dive deep into its fascinating past that dates back before the birth of our nation. We invite our guests at the Inn at Bowman's Hill to head to Parry Mansion and take a historical walking tour of New Hope to catch a glimpse of life in the 1700s and 1800s, when New Hope and America were being shaped.
The Parry Mansion is a stately stone residence in the heart of New Hope that stands as a testament to the town's rich past. It was built in 1784 by Benjamin Parry, who is often referred to as the Father of New Hope. When Parry came to the town in the early 1780s, it was called Coryell’s Ferry. He bought the Hope Flour Mill (where the Bucks County Playhouse now stands) and expanded it, adding a lumber mill, saw mill and flaxseed oil mill. It was destroyed by fire in 1790. Within a year, Parry rebuilt the mill and named it the New Hope Flour Mill, thus giving the town of Coryell’s Ferry its new name.
The Parry Mansion has witnessed centuries of history, and today, it proudly serves as a museum, with tours available May through October. Stepping through the mansion's doors is like stepping back in time. Five generations of the Parry family lived within its walls, and each of the 11 furnished rooms represents a different time period during which the Parrys occupied the home. From the Colonial kitchen and Empire dining room to a Federal bedroom and Victorian music room, each space tells a unique story, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a bygone era.
Parry Mansion is also the starting point for the New Hope Historical Society's expertly guided walking tour. Exploring downtown New Hope on foot allows you to soak in the details of the charming architecture and discover hidden gems tucked away in corners. As you walk the cobblestone streets, you'll be introduced to the people and places that made New Hope what it is today. Hear fascinating tales of Revolutionary War action and the legacies of New Hope's illustrious citizens and famous artists who contributed to the town's creative vibe. The tour is approximately one mile long and lasts about one hour.
